4th
July 2003
As of April 1st 2003 all Hitachi LCD modules are produced
using lead-free solder. The environmental impact of
lead has recently come under close scrutiny with European
Union directives on Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment (WEEE) and the Restriction of Hazardous
Substances (RHS) determining that any electronic product
sold in the European market will have to use lead-free
solder from 1st July 2006.
Lead, however, is still a key
component of tin-lead solders used in electronic assemblies
and systems. The use of lead in electrical and electronic
equipment increases costs associated with re-use,
recycling and disposal. Research into the replacement
of tin-lead solder has been underway for many years,
however implementation has been slow and industry
infrastructure has not yet fully adapted to the requirements
of this new technology. Hitachi has been actively
leading industry activity in the production of lead-free
electronic products.
Hitachi's commitment to the environment
enables the manufacture of lead-free LCD modules that
comply with forthcoming legislation and ensure continued
access to European and world markets.
All display technical specifications
and operating characteristics remain unchanged.
